Gov. Nixon signs off on budget cuts to MOREnet

MOREnet, an organization that provides low cost internet access for education institutions, will lose an additional $7 million in subsidies according to Governor Jay Nixon’s office. This is the fourth cut made this year to the original $14 million subsidy.

Gov. Nixon’s status quo bill (aka the Manufacturing Jobs Act)

Governor Nixon’s budget cuts and tax incentive propositions are highly reactive. His administrative practices lack vision and foresight, promoting normalcy and stagnation. While Missourians should laud Nixon for making the difficult decisions and putting those decisions into action, we should also reflect on what has been lost.

The Citizens for Barbara Lanning

Barbara Lanning, a pro-labor democrat from Lawson, Missouri, was Rep Bob Nance’s political opponent in the 2008 general election and is his opponent again this year. On September 24, 2008, the Richmond Daily News reported the Missouri Democratic Parties’ (MDP) claims that Lanning is one of the strongest candidates they have run in the 36th Legislative District in a long time. The MDP is referring to Jerry Cline’s run for the 36th Legislative in 2006 and, perhaps, Gary Kelley’s 2004 reelection gone awry. However, the 2006 and 2008 election results were identical. Even though Lanning raised seven times more cash than Cline, they both lost to Nance 60-40.

The British Petroleum boycott

It started with a fire 44 days ago. Today roughly 836,000 barrels of oil have gushed in the Gulf. With the initial crisis projected to continue well into the fall of 2010, the consequences of this disaster will likely impact the Gulf for several decades.

Memorial Day weekend has arrived as political rhetoric is at a fever pitch. Conservatives questioned President Obama’s ability to lead and his respect for the military because he visited a military cemetery in Illinois and not the tomb of the fallen soldier. Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson (R-Missouri) questioned Tommy Sower’s military service record. Conservatives are telling the American people that gays cannot serve openly in the military because it will cause “chaos amongst the ranks”. The nonsense went on all weekend.

Rep Nance's conflicts near and far

When Rep. Bob Nance was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2004, he was the first republican elected to the House from the 36th Legislative District in recent memory. Rep. Nance's election to the Missouri House coincided with the beginning of a deep conservative take-over of Missouri's political apparatus. Matt Blunt was elected governor, Rod Jetton was selected to be the Speaker of the House and Nance was suddenly a rising star in the Republican Party. Defeating a democratic incumbent in the 36th legislative district as a republican is miraculous. Shortly thereafter, Jetton and Nance became close.

Summer school is on!

HB 1543, an emergency clause to recent education legislation, will not stop public schools from conducting summer school this year. Many public schools throughout Missouri were on hold from enrolling students in the 2010 summer school program. That is no longer necessary.

Rep John McGovern (R-Excelsior Springs)

Police Chief John McGovern has been the Chief of Police for Excelsior Springs, Missouri since 1982. With his retirement looming, McGovern sought election to an open seat in the Excelsior Springs Board of Education. Today he is the Vice President of that distinguished board. As indicated by House Resolution No. 3299, he is also a fervent and trusted ally of Rep Bob Nance.

Mrs. Barbara Lanning - democrat

Mrs. Lanning, is the 2010 democratic candidate for the 36th Legislative district. She also ran against Nance in 2008, but lost by a landslide even though she out raised Nance and was riding the hope-change wave of 2008. A pro-labor democrat from Missouri out-raising an incumbent pro-business republican is pretty amazing.

The execution of Dr. George Tiller

Dr. George Tiller was killed on May 31, 2009 by Scott Roeder while Dr. Tiller was serving as an usher during a Sunday morning church service in Wichita. Regardless, the execution of Dr. George Tiller had nothing to do with Dr. George Tiller, and it had even less to do with religious doctrine. Dr. Tiller’s execution was about fanaticism and hatred perpetuated by one non-profit and leveraged by one political party. Sadly, hatred has filled the abortion debate for the last few decades, and Wichita is now the decisive operation for the religious and political right.

A politician's religion

Many of our elected officials, in our past and present, are deeply religious individuals. Whether these decision makers are Catholic or Christian, practicing or not, most of them were exposed to religious doctrine in some form. Many prominent politicians remember the zealous pastor as young children that inadvertently taught them about the importance of passionate presentations. William Wilberforce was greatly influenced by John Henry Newton, later resulting in the abolition of the British slave trade. President Clinton, President Bush (who is influenced by religious doctrine and not necessarily any particular religious leader) and President Obama are all deeply religious individuals.
